Premios Lo Nuestro (PLN) 2021 aired from Miami’s AmericanArlines Arena on Thursday, Feb. 18, on Univision.
As part of the event, it paid tribute to music star and founder of Fania Records – Johnny Pacheco. The tribute featured the voice of “El Caballero de la Salsa” Gilberto Santa Rosa, who was joined by salsa singer Jose Alberto “El Canario.” Renowned music producer Sergio George and flutist Néstor Torres were also part of the tribute, which included songs like “Quitate Tu,” “Mi Gente,” “Los Compadres,” and “Guaguanco Pa’l que Sabe.” The segment was introduced by Marc Anthony.

Johnny Pacheco was a Dominician musician, composer, bandleader, and producer who was most influential in the dissemination of Salsa and Latin music in general. He passed away on Feb. 15, 2021, at the age of 85. He was an early supporter of artists who are now icons of the genre, such as Willie Colon and the late Celia Cruz.
