Google.org will match your donations toward Puerto Rico for the next two weeks
Google.org is starting a campaign today to benefit Puerto Rico. It promises to match your donations, up to two million dollars, between June 8 and 20, 2018. Donations can be made now here.
Spearheading the campaign is the creator of “Hamilton,” Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is gathering an important group of celebrities to use their social media to bring this effort to the public’s eye. The money gathered by the campaign will be given to a most important sector in Puerto Rico’s recovery: small and medium businesses – in particular those involved in tourism, agriculture, and fishing.
“I am grateful to Google.org for its commitment to help Puerto Rico in such a significant way. Every one in the island works daily to recover from the devastation left behind by Hurricane Maria. This campaign arrives at a perfect time to take advantage of the energy and the enthusiasm that people are currently feeling…” said Miranda.
Hispanic Federation and Mercy Corps, both non-profit organizations, will receive the money gathered, and Google.org will support their efforts with its donation, tools, and volunteers.
Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico on Sept. 20, 2017, with catastrophic results. When the winds stopped and the waters retracted, there was no electric service, the most important natural sources had been destroyed, and the infrastructure of the country had suffered.
Nine months later, hurricane season is once again upon the island, making it urgent to speed up the recovery. Twenty percent of small and medium sized businesses are still closed, tourism is at its lowest level, and electricity works intermittently. Knowing this, Google.org wants to help revitalize those small and medium sized businesses, which are interconnected with several other industries. To help them will bring about positive repercussions throughout the island.
Google.org’s efforts started a few weeks ago, when 35 Latin employees, many directly involved with Puerto Rico, traveled to the island as volunteers to support business owners. They took not only their own business experience but also digital tools designed by Google to help them plan their economic recovery.
Alfredo Garcia, Manager of Development for Google, and one of the volunteers who participated, said: “As a Puerto Rican and Google employee, I felt a strong commitment to help in the recovery of the island. From Google we can provide commercial tools, resources, and knowledge, on top of money, that can help the economy of the country. I am proud to be part of this group that is helping American citizens recover and come out strong from this experience.”
