Gloria Estefan at the Hollywood Bowl – go see her tonight!
I made it last night and, at the risk of sounding corny, I tell you – I came out inspired. Gloria is promoting her album “The Standards,” in which she sings gorgeous American songs like “I’ve grown accustomed to his face” and “Young at heart.” Of course she also inserted her Latin side into the concert and made it quite personal by introducing her own daughter, Emily Estefan, to sing backed by the YOLA (Youth Orchestra LA).
I’ve concluded that the brilliancy of Gloria Estefan, the reason why she has made it as far as she has, is her acknowledgment that we can’t stay in a box in a world that is so diverse. So yes, she has Cuban roots, and every so often she yells out: “Donde estan mis Latinos?” but she also realizes that she is surrounded by people who speak English and she caters well to them. A woman of the world she is. Last night alone she sang also in Italian and Portuguese!
By the way, if anyone out there is looking for a rocking Salsa band, may as well hire the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra! “Gershwin ala Salsa,” Gloria called them. No matter what she had to sing, they knew how to play it.
YOLA had a special appearance. These are the young people from some of the most underserved parts of Los Angeles who are being provided instruments and music training and who since 2007 have had the opportunity to perform at venues like the Walt Disney Concert Hall and with Latin stars like Juanes. They backed Emily during her participation, which was appropriate, since she is also a young performer. Emily has her mother’s gift. Her performance was quite nice and she was warmly received by the crowd.
You would have the loveliest time at the Bowl tonight. Bring something to eat and drink, arrive early, and just look about you. The whole thing is gorgeous. Just do yourself a favor and bring a trash bag since the green plastic Gelson bags the attendants carry about are “only for the use of the patrons dining with us.” Meaning, those pre-ordering the food from the restaurants at the Bowl, through their website.
Of course the last song was “Conga,” but a mighty one this one was reinforced by the Hollywood Bowl fireworks! People went crazy. And of course someone started a conga line.
Enjoy yourself tonight. And don’t forget Tuesday will be a huge night at the Bowl with Ruben Blades, Gustavo Dudamel, and the LA Phil!
Here’s a bit of Gloria singing “Sonrie” in English, Spanish and Italian:
